The reality of career ambitions
When we start our careers, there is a ton of hopes, goals, plans, milestones and dare I say… expectations.
“If I work hard, I will get promoted…” “if I stay longer, I will get a raise…” “If I keep my head down, I will be seen as reliable…”
The logic here can be followed and many fall into these traps which almost always leads to frustration or missed opportunities.
So you might ask… what should I focus on? How do I set myself up to grow?
The reality is there are some brutal truths to keep in mind.
Standing out is necessary. Basically get noticed or get ignored.
You are your best advocate. Sell yourself or sell yourself short.
Advice is free, action is rare. So apply the lessons you learn.
It’s not luck… it’s hard work.
Embarrassment is the cost of entry.
Your network is it’s own currency.
Be personable, but don’t take it personally.
Talent alone isn’t enough. Attitude and adaptability are required.
You WILL need to change.
You control your mindset not your environment.
As you climb that ladder, the path gets skinnier. Leveraging the truths above can help you stand out when the opportunities are there.
